A Thinner Line

Exhibition introduction

A Thinner Line is an installation of artworks which collectively consider the line between life and death. Marsh’s latest exhibition features reinterpretations of new works developed during her time at Campos des Guttiérez, an international artist’s residency in Medellin, Colombia

For the greater part of Marsh’s practice she tends to use the ‘materials of colonisation’ such as wood, wool, watercolour, textiles and creates installations with found or adapted objects. This exhibition features materials from Medellin such as terracotta and shoelace cord from the textile district.

Travelling to Medellin, Colombia for her first international residency Marsh indeed got to experience a ‘thinner line between life and death’. Marsh intended this to be a learning experience of crafting, as well as challenging herself to practice outside the context of New Zealand. She was interested in learning more about her position in the global cultural landscape as both a New Zealander, and as a descendant of the colonial movement.

Colombia: Wax, Wane [El Palacio de Cultura Rafael Uribe Uribe, December 2013]

In Colombia security grills, or rejas in Spanish, adorn every window that could possibly be climbed into. Most live their lives behind them.

The Medellin River runs through the centre of the city and is heavily polluted. Corruption thwarts efforts to enforce regulation. My assistant and I lost a layer of skin from our hands while washing them.

The night also included a performance by German Accíon contra natura performing the impossible task of maintaining time - as the 'time' moved faster than he could replace it.

Our artist talk was well attended, and translated by Andrés Monzón, curator of the exhibition and director of the Campos des Gutiérrez artist residency.

Press: Exhibition in Medellin, Colombia

Lots of hard work went into 'Crecer, Menguar' ('Wax, Wane'), a very successful concluding exhibition for the last session of Campos de Gutiérrez for 2013. The exhibition was held at the prestigious Palacio de la Cultura, a grand historic building in el Centro de Medellin. Bringing several artists together, both international and Colombian, 'Crecer, Menguar' focused on time as a linear and a circular configuration.
